A Show House Across the Lake

My mother attended a Show House recently across Lake Ponchartrain, across from New Orleans.  Here are her notes.

A recent tour of Southern Living’s Louisiana Idea House yielded some surprises but not many ideas.  Southern Living calls Bayou Bend, located in the Terra Bella development outside of Covington, Louisiana, a “quiet cottage”.  Granted, its location is quiet, but its size is not what I’d call a cottage.  It has 4 bedrooms, a study, mud room, a garage apartment and I didn’t even count the number of baths!  Designers Grace Kaynor and Vesta Fort did feature works by local artists, though.  Large cypress doors open onto an entry with a tile area “rug” and an open floor plan including a dining area, great room, kitchen and breakfast nook.  The dining table is marble topped and surrounded by antique chairs that appear too low for the table.  A Nicole Charbonnet painting hangs over the antique English sideboard and two Louisiana landscape photos by David Halladay and golden glass pendant lights by Fifi B. Laughlin complement the décor.  In the great room, Amanda Talley’s graphic painting is showcased over a chest upon which sits a faux barnacle encrusted ceramic bowl echoing the ovoid shapes in the painting.  A lavender sofa here and a lavender ottoman in the master suite are unexpected color surprises.  Another large graphic piece from Guthrie Contemporary Gallery is featured in the very small study off of the great room.  Tucked behind the study is a guest bedroom and bath, a powder room, mud room and stairs to the second floor.  E. Lee Jahncke Mead painted a metallic floral pattern in the powder room.

The second floor has a very wide hallway, found in many Southern plantations to help with air circulation during the hot humid summers.  The designers took advantage of the width to incorporate a reading/library area.  The master suite opens off of the hallway, which leads to the gallery across the front of the house.  Another Amanda Talley piece hangs in the master suite along with two abstract landscapes and a canvas over the bed by Bernd Haussman.

Outdoor living areas include a back porch with room for seating and dining and another sitting area with a fireplace.  Above the garage is a studio with a Murphy bed, dining area, kitchen and bath.  Some cottage!

Here’s to Kick Starting your weekend with The Heavy with How Do you Like Me Now from their  album The House That Dirt Built. This is one of mine and my husband’s favorites dance songs. Enjoy :
