{"id":12164,"date":"2017-02-09T07:52:13","date_gmt":"2017-02-09T12:52:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ashley-spencer.com\/ArtIsEverywhere\/?p=12164"},"modified":"2026-09-10T18:16:11","modified_gmt":"2026-09-10T22:16:11","slug":"yayoi-kusamas-love-dots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ashley-spencer.com\/ArtIsEverywhere\/2017\/02\/yayoi-kusamas-love-dots\/","title":{"rendered":"Yayoi Kusama&#8217;s Love Dots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\">When I saw the pictures of Yayoi Kusama&#8217;s artwork in the paper about her upcoming exhibition at the <a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/hirshhorn.si.edu\/kusama\/the-exhibition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hirshhorn museum<\/a>, I recalled one of the <a title=\"Previous Post - Yayoi Kusama\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ashley-spencer.com\/ArtIsEverywhere\/2009\/07\/polka-dot-psychedelic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first posts I had written<\/a> on Art Is Everywhere. It happened to be her polka dot artwork in the art exhibit &#8220;Happenings.&#8221; She loves <a title=\"Washington Post - Yayoi Kusama\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/museums\/a-season-of-colors-from-renaissance-glazes-to-psychedelic-installations\/2017\/02\/03\/384454c6-df4b-11e6-918c-99ede3c8cafa_story.html?tid=magnet&amp;utm_term=.ca2c9e4cb53e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dots and uses them with mirrors, along with and on pumpkins<\/a>. The exhibit is supposed to be a sensory explosion. I was guilty of not realizing her connections to other great artists.<\/p>\n<p>I loved her hypnotic patterning, expressive sense of color &amp; unconventional spirit.<br \/>\nI dedicated a Halloween pumpkin last year in her honor. It was harder to create than I thought it would be. She was our modern-day Seurat!<\/p>\n<p>Her story is fascinating, especially knowing that she reached out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashley-spencer.com\/ArtIsEverywhere\/2008\/10\/a-couple-exhibits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Georgia O\u2019Keefe<\/a> who\u2019s work I love, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashley-spencer.com\/ArtIsEverywhere\/2009\/02\/joseph-cornell\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joseph Cornell<\/a>, another one of my favorite contemporary artists, who people thought was crazy, and even Warhol, who she thought copied her work, to help propel her career.<\/p>\n<p>She checked herself into a psychiatric ward in Tokyo where she had moved back home and lived the rest of her days.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, her artwork went viral as she became more secluded but it filled others with joy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"border-radius: 2px; text-indent: 20px; width:
