Why, not because my last post proves the point on another level, but because artists think analytically, from how to get to point A (blank canvas for instance) to point B (painted artwork) and construct this process and composition for getting there. This often requires subconscious, abstract mathematical and scientific thinking.<\/p>\n<p>The following articles further explain this interesting concept. Jesse Rosten explains using his fascination (mine too) with butterflies as an example in his article, <a title=\"Jesse Rosten\" href=\"http:\/\/jesserosten.com\/2010\/art-science\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Art &amp; Science<\/em><\/a>, that art would not exist without science and conversely, new scientific discoveries happen through creativity. [Love these butterflies. They remind me of <a title=\"Casart Butterflies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.casartcoverings.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">some that I&#8217;ve painted<\/a>.]<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3926\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3926\" style=\"width: 418px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Jesse Rosten\" href=\"http:\/\/jesserosten.com\/2010\/art-science\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3926\" title=\"Jesse Rosten, butterflies - Art &amp; Science\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ashley-spencer.com\/ArtIsEverywhere\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/008ins.jpg\" alt=\"Jesse Rosten, butterflies - Art &amp; Science as seen on Art Is Everywhere\" width=\"418\" height=\"560\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ashley-spencer.com\/ArtIsEverywhere\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/008ins.jpg 418w, https:\/\/www.ashley-spencer.com\/ArtIsEverywhere\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/008ins-223x300.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 418px) 100vw, 418px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3926\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jesse Rosten, butterflies - Art &amp; Science<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Interesting that I found this next post, <a title=\"Northwest Progressive\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nwprogressive.org\/weblog\/2009\/02\/math-and-art-in-education.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Math and Art in Education<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0 from the Northwest Progressive Institute Advocate, a &#8220;liberal perspective on world, national and local politics.&#8221; I normally pass on political blogging because I&#8217;m surrounded by it daily in DC. I&#8217;m progressive enough, however to reflect on what might be views contrary to my own. I agree with this perspective, however,\u00a0 and there&#8217;s a lovely drawing of Waikiki Beach to view here, as well:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>We tend to view students in two very broad categories: &#8220;artistic&#8221; kids  and &#8220;intellectual&#8221; kids. This is a crass generalization, but it&#8217;s true.  Society, by and large, expects people to be one or the other. Rarely  both.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Which is to say that there is not an expectation that an  artistic kid will be any good at math, science, or engineering. Nor is  there any expectation that intellectual kids should have any interest in  or aptitude for art.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Frankly, I think that&#8217;s crap. I think that  every kid has a creative side regardless of their skills in the  sciences. And I think that every kid has an analytic side, regardless of  their skills in the arts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>And I know, because I&#8217;ve lived it  myself, that math and art can reinforce one another. Math can be used to  teach art and strengthen one&#8217;s creative side. The desire to make art  can be used as a springboard from which to teach math.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Irish Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/newspaper\/sciencetoday\/2010\/0923\/1224279493223.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Secret Art of Math<\/em><\/a> is discussed in <em>The Irish Times<\/em>. I&#8217;ll have to check out the book <em>The Secret Mathemaeticians<\/em> as well<em>, <\/em>which describes how artists have used math in their creative process. You can watch the <a title=\"Royal Society\" href=\"http:\/\/royalsociety.org\/The-secret-mathematicians\/\" target=\"_blank\">webcast of the presentation here<\/a>.<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a title=\"Chicago Arts Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/chicagoartmagazine.com\/2010\/08\/scientists-as-artists\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Chicago Art Magazine<\/a> <\/em>also explores the relationship between scientist and artist. Daniel Nolan was a nuclear engineer before he decided to become a resin painter, for example. He describes the original idea can be obtained by both artists and scientists but the difference is how it is applied in their work.
