Contemporary Chicken

I’m still trying to figure this one out. Since I like chickens, I’ll post about Koen Vanmechelen’s contemporary Chicken Project exhibit at Connor Contemporary Art through December 31st. I guess I don’t get the contemporary art part except for it’s sparseness in style and explanation.

I was more drawn to the Belgian artist’s chicken illustrations, which I thought were quite interesting.

I have an affinity for chickens because of a little known secret, I used to raise them in my back yard. I tended to these chickens from egg to chick to adult. I can attest to them all having distinct personalities. Unfortunately, I had to let them go back into their natural wooded habitat, where they would naturally fly up into the trees at night because their wings were not clipped. Some mystery animal hunted and killed most of them. It was a sad time but I still have fond memories of my chickens, so I appreciate art where depictions of them are included. I really like this one on the cover of the Artists Lunch.

Here’s some follow up news I recently learned regarding Chor Boogie, an artist who I wrote about previously. He was recently stabbed while painting a community mural in San Francisco. I was drawn to the news because I immediately recognized his stylized eyes in the mural.

Ending on a more uplifting note, this video made me laugh. The techno beat is a bit annoying but it’s just too plain silly not to post for kick starting your weekend.

I'm an artist, wife and mother of two boys. I started my illustration business, The Occasional Palette over 35 years ago, when my oldest son was an infant. Once my children were in school, I began painting decorative, faux finishes and murals through my second business, Casart, now over 30 years old. My third business, Casart Coverings, is a springboard from my second.
