Gathering Murals in Canada

When I saw this mural, I thought of the quintessential Medieval Royal Feast as depicted along with Medieval castle scenes on the exterior of Hotel Bourbon — not the liquor as in the last Mural Monday post.  Although this mural is located in Montreal, Canada, it has a festive feel that reminds me of  gatherings this past American Thanksgiving — a little mayhem, a little madness and a lot of ritual.

Other Canadian murals, such as this nicely painted one by Paul Livingston in 1997 of Prospect Park, in Oshawa, has an illustrative quality to it. I like the unusual colors of the yellow sky with blue trees and the different perspectives that are depicted. It reminds those in the park of those meetings, family picnics and amusements that were once and still can be enjoyed at this spot.

The text of the mural reads:

We held our annual family picnic here at Prospect Park until Mr Edmondson sold it to Mr McLaughlin to build Parkwood.

The text of the memorial plaque reads:

PROSPECT PARK(1997)
BY PAUL LIVINGSTON, BOWMANVILLE, ONTARIO
Prospect Park was an amusement and recreation park around the
turn of the century, providing a popular meeting place for
picnics, band concerts, sports and amusements. Prospect Park
was purchased in 1915 by R. S. (Sam) McLaughlin, the founder
of General Motors of Canada. The house featured in the mural
was torn down to make way for the McLaughlin home, known as
Parkwood, which remains today as a National Historic Site.

I'm an artist, wife and mother of two boys. I started my illustration business, The Occasional Palette over 35 years ago, when my oldest son was an infant. Once my children were in school, I began painting decorative, faux finishes and murals through my second business, Casart, now over 30 years old. My third business, Casart Coverings, is a springboard from my second.
