True Blood

I’m a big True Blood fan, the HBO series. I didn’t think I would be but it grabbed me from the opening movie. I recently came upon this Wiredrive website explaining the art of the main title design and exploring process of creating the opening title by Digital Kitchen.

The font was based on Southern roadside signage. The swamp and other scenes were filmed directly in Louisiana. Church scenes were filmed in Chicago and the the bar scenes were filmed in Seattle. It all comes together beautifully. I find it brilliant the way they have have been able to mix themes of death, ruin and rebirth. I can’t help but think of Flannery O’Connor and other great, classic Southern writers. The song is perfect for the footage. My theory; although I can’t confirm it, is that it’s based on Tom Petty’s Saving Grace. (Click the link to Kick-Start-Your Weekend.)

The juxtaposition of these images, sex and spiritual, violence and transformation is provocative.

Good call pointing out the Flannery O’Connor -ness of the show. I hadn’t thought about her work having a possible influence; kind of puts me in the mood to read a few of her stories.
