Ad Stories

I used to watch the Super Bowl just for the ads, but not this year. I was watching for the Saints. Although I thought the the Bud Light ads had the overall ad title hands down; I liked the parody on Lost and the book group; I think the Green Police for Audi was a winner. Here are some other notables from last year.

The creative use of storytelling in ads for UPS, Walmart, Geico among others by the Martin Agency won them the U.S. Ad Agency of 2009. Their 30 second ad stories touch those who see them and create an impression that lasts for the brand they are advertising. This one they did for Walmart where a little boy wishes for snow for Christmas for his dad serving in one of the wars in the Middle East is particularly moving.

I particularly like the one for UPS, where the presenter illustrates the benefits of using UPS on a whiteboard and then those illustrations become interactive as he toggles them up and down. Very clever. There are several they did for UPS that are magical like this.

And, we’re all familiar with the quirkiness of the Geico ads that we see almost every day on TV. There are some of the most memorable. Here’s another post I wrote about T. Rowe Price’s clever and artistic TV ads.

I'm an artist, wife and mother of two boys. I started my illustration business, The Occasional Palette over 35 years ago, when my oldest son was an infant. Once my children were in school, I began painting decorative, faux finishes and murals through my second business, Casart, now over 30 years old. My third business, Casart Coverings, is a springboard from my second.
