History Painted

Since this is the week of the reenactment of the civil war battle of Bull Run in Manassas, VA, I thought I’d look up some historic murals. Here are a few.

There happens to be a wonderful one in the Shaw Neighborhood in DC. This African American Civil War Memorial is located at Vermont Ave and U Street NW at the Reynolds Center for American Art & Portraiture. It is named after the white colonel, Robert Gould Shaw, who commanded the first African American 54th Regiment.

Cuba, MO happens to be known for its many public art murals.

I’m including this one because of the name reference on Lincoln Hwy. in Fulton, Il. depicting a historic byway.

Murals can also be painted historically — in a primitive style — to emulate those painted during Colonial or Early American time periods, as this one is painted by William Totten. The mural was commissioned by homeowner in the Bernards Township of Somerset County, NJ.

I'm an artist, wife and mother of two boys. I started my illustration business, The Occasional Palette over 35 years ago, when my oldest son was an infant. Once my children were in school, I began painting decorative, faux finishes and murals through my second business, Casart, now over 30 years old. My third business, Casart Coverings, is a springboard from my second.
