    Creating Computer Snowflakes

    I recently discovered where the the delight of seeing the first snow of the season can be captured on a website. You can make your own snowflakes and add them to the over 8 million that create the backdrop on the home page of SnowDays. When you mouse over each arrow, an individually designed snowflake appears with the creator’s name and location. You can respond to them if you like. Email addresses are not visible and kept confidential. You can type in any location to see the multitudes of snowflakes that were created from within that area and even print them out.     Robert Dafford

    Robert Dafford, born in 1951, has been doing murals for more than 30 years.  He studied art at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette and interrupted his art work to serve three years as a naval illustrator and draftsman during the Vietnam War.  His first mural was a rainbow trout painted in 1969 for a fish market.  He now has painted nearly 300 murals around the world.  Several are in New Orleans.  One prominent location is on the corner of Girod and Magazine streets.  This depicts a horse-drawn coffee wagon of the Reilly Coffee Company.  Another striking mural is the 150 foot tall clarinet on the side of the Holiday…

    Bicycle Diaries

    I’m trying to get more exercise but won’t be biking long distance. Therein this book, Bicycle Diaries, by David Byrne of Talking Heads fame attracted my attention. Little did I know he was such a bicycling fan or that he had toured many cities this way. Very inspirational, if not vicariously. I’ll have to get it because it describes his appreciation for architecture and bike-friendliness through all the various towns he visited. Just like walking as opposed to driving, you get a different perspective this way. To kick start the weekend, rather than post another David Byrne or Talking Heads song, which I love, let’s go with the B52’s Roam…
