    9•11•9th

    The 9th anniversary of September 11 (9/11/01) was remembered this weekend. As I write this, I am nervous because both my husband and my oldest son, Piers, are traveling on 9•9•9 (September (9th month), 9, 9th anniversary of 9/11). I wouldn’t put it past the terrorists to use this date to their advantage. Fortunately, they arrived safely and have returned from a UVA vs. USC game, where they were the only orange hats in a sea of maroon. It’s hard for me to believe that it has already been nine years.     Pop-Ups Plus

    I recently saw notice for and exhibition called, Paper Engineering: Fold, Pull, Pop and Turn, about pop-up books at The National Museum of American History. I’ve always enjoyed pop-up books, so I hope I can see this. The exhibit contains book from the Smithsonian Institutions’ Library’s Here’s the NMAH’s quite fascinating video on the subject and how involved a pop-up project may be. I have an even greater appreciation of a pop-up book after watching this. It’s truly a work of art and a paper engineering and folding feat.     Transforming Art

    By the title I mean literally not figuratively — art that is constantly changing. I was mesmerized by this video and the creative talents of  the Rinpa Eshidan Collective as seen on Coilhouse blog. I love watching them but would have a hard time doing what they do. I understand they are all about the creative process of art and not the end result. There is a wonderful, freeing sense of detachment there but I just work so hard at creating something that I wouldn’t want to paint over it.
