The Physics of Origami
I’ve already written a post on origami, featuring Dr. Robert Lang, but he was profiled recently in The Washington Post, and Rachel Saslow’s article, When Origami Meets Rocket Science, was so informative, I thought I’d do a follow up. At 49 he’s the quintessential origami master. He quit his career as a laser physicist and semiconductor laser and fiber-optic researcher while working for NASA in their Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Valorie Schleicher
Another Milwaukee artist who I met through my searches is Valorie Schleicher. I was taken with her unusual sculptural form, particularly her Strong Woman series. When I spoke with Valorie, she explained that she had been inspired recently by the death of Alexander Maqueen, who took his life as a result of his mother’s death. It was interesting to us both in that conversation, how this talented fashion designer’s ideas for his designs may have been inspired by his mother and then with her death it was too much for him to bear. I’ve had a rare and exciting opportunity recently to “meet” a few, very talented artists in Milwaukee of whom our paths may have not crossed otherwise. I met these artists through Internet searches and would like to profile them in this space this week. Our conversations and email correspondence have been so open, friendly and forthcoming that I feel like we may know each other already; however, I do hope I get a chance to meet them someday in person.
