Think Outside of the Airport!
When I first saw this image in the Washington Post, I thought these were modern-day, Egyptian Hieroglyphs, but no, they are the architectural diagrams of airport terminals. This is something I have seen but take for granted every time I fly. However, I thought this was so creative to recognize that these airport silhouettes could be conceived as artistic designs. Charles Cohan, a printmaker and art professor in Hawaii, who travels quite a bit, noticed these shapes in the back of many airline magazines. He’s collected 62 and has made 90 plates. Costumes and Murals (without Political Commentary)
Actually, I’m not interested in the political commentary associated with these murals, only the murals themselves. I came upon them quite by accident — when I was searching for this picture below in the Washington Post of the ballerinas’ costumes — and the online version of the front page featured these murals. Look how they help to enliven this run down area of Steubenville, Ohio and no one would necessarily expect to find them there. Frank Gehry
Timing is everything…I just got a google feed and the subject happened to be about Frank Gehry, who I mentioned in my last post. Well, I have to follow up, for this is too coincidental. It is my goal to visit Bilbao one day, in Madrid (see earlier post on the metro), which has become my favorite contemporary piece of architecture, not so much for it’s incredible form, which is incredible–revolutionizing all previous, traditional building barriers–but for how it captures and reflects light.
